The Hairy Crab Desert Classic
April 28- May 2 2024
Palm Springs, CA
Hairy Crab Charities is thrilled to add Parc Center for Disabilites in St Petersburg Florida as our 2023 charity recipient.
We had boarded our bus returning to Shanghai following the second Hairy Crab Invitational. Our accountant, Professor Chip, announced "Guys, since Dr. D & Budweiser sprung for the beer, we've got a couple thousand bucks surplus. What do you want to do with it ?" Someone replied "Give it to Joey's hospital." Everyone agreed. Then, Speedbump offered up a trip to Whistler and Slim a phallic putter. An impromptu charity auction ensued and Hairy Crab Charities was born.
Our resident philanthropist, Joey T, had been donating to the Children's Hospital at Fudan University. He was helping their efforts to get China's first neo-natal intensive care unit off the ground. Recognizing the opportunity, Hairy Crab Charities ramped up the charity auction and added corporate sponsors to our event. Over the next several years the Hairy Crab funded equipment, training and even an ambulance with our mascot "Crabby" on the side.
Fudan doubled their capacity to handling several hundred premature newborns while improving their survival rate from 20% to 80%. We're thrilled to have played a small role in their progress. In a heart warming twist of fate, a friend of the Crab's newborn daughter survived a scare thanks to the folks at Fudan.
Fudan's success attracted more substantial funding helping them build a new hospital and allowing Hairy Crab Charities to refocus on other children's' charities.
Through Heart 2 Heart, we've helped pay for heart surgeries for children whose families can't afford it.
In recent years our primary focus has been One Sky, formerly Half the Sky, and their sister organization, Chunhui Children. One Sky has worked with the Chinese government to upgrade orphanages around China to provide a caring, nurturing enviornment for China's orphans. Among many things, Hairy Crab donations have helped outfit a surgical staging facility in Beijing to support OneSky's work with disabled orphans and sponsored a preschool in Luoyang.
Hairy Crab Charities' efforts are manned 100% by volunteer expatriate businessmen. All money raised is passed on to our charities with no additional overhead. Over 2011, the funds raised by Hairy Crab Charities have continued with our mission of helping kids who really need help.
Over the last year, our primary efforts have focused on three programs:
Half The Sky and China Care: Hairy Crab Charities funded a portion of the China Care facility in Beijing. This facility takes in kids from orphanages all over China and cares for them both before and after they have critical surgeries. Well trained nurses and care givers take care of the kids while they prep for surgeries. They also look after the kids after surgeries and make sure they are well before they go back to the orphanages or before they are adopted. Our donation funded the operations of a portion of the facility and helped to buy some needed equipment. For more information on this program, please have a look at: www.chinacare.org
Half The Sky Luoyang Infant Nurture program: Hairy Crab Charities funded the set up and operations of an Infant Nurture Program associated with orphanages in Luoyang, China. Half the Sky has done an amazing job of building and sustaining well run orphanages all around China. As a next step, the organizers got the permission of the Chinese authorities to set up a nurturing program for the orphans so that they can learn and function well as they enter mainstream society. Nurses, teachers and caregivers all provide a nurturing environment that will help the children get ready for life. For more information on this program, please have a look at www.halfthesky.org.
Heart To Heart Shanghai. Hairy Crab Charities funded critical surgeries for 4 critically ill children whose families would not have otherwise been able to afford the surgeries. Heart to Heart cares for the children pre and post surgery and offers critically ill children a chance at survival. The 2011 Crab was a great event and we raised over RMB300,000. We will work hard to make sure that these funds help kids who would like not be able to get help elsewhere.
In May 2009, Half the Sky, in partnership with China Care and the Ministry of Civil Affairs opened the Half the Sky China Care Home. This facility provides a caring home for medically fragile orphans who will undergo life saving surgeries. Hairy Crab Charites is proud to support this effort by sponsoring the Special Care Nursery for the home's youngest residents. Click here for more on the Half the Sky China Care Home.
